Sit in Blue is an iteration within the Sit series of objects. The the Sit series is part of the Almost Natural research agenda. This research agenda that investigates the relationship between natural and synthetic things.
The Sit series of objects, designed as seating objects, investigates the potential of utilizing computational design methodologies to question and transform normative everyday objects such as a stool into a condition that responds to the conceptual and material weight brought about by the act of sitting. These objects purposely leap beyond structure and function to produce volumes of excess.
Sit responds to the heaviness of sitting through a topological transformation from volume to line that articulate differently according to a body-stool-ground interface.
The design and production of this series relied on a computational custom-built system that attempts to amplify the character of compression-only structures (i.e. Structures that can only undergo compression, which is very appropriate for a seating object). These studies were continuously prototyped utilizing additive manufacturing techniques that produce models that prefer compression and perform much weaker in tension. These studies were eventually scaled up through developing a non-linear resin casting workflow that explores the relationship between the moldable material and a formwork that reacts in a volatile manner under the exothermic process of curing resin to produce highly articulate things that one can sit on.
