Earthish
Furniture + Objects
Earthish is the first iteration of the Earthish research agenda, which aims to interrogate the potential use of crumb rubber from recycled rubber tires within architecture and design through the juxtaposition of precise manufacturing techniques with non-linear casting operations. Table 1 is made entirely out of crumb rubber recycled from rubber tires in Sharjah, UAE, mixed with a bio-resin.
The objects within the Earthish research agenda are design and fabricated through a juxtaposition of precise manufacturing techniques with non-linear casting operations. Precise wooden molds were used for the casting operation, while the chemical reaction between crumb rubber, liquid binder and paint pigment affects both surface type as well as shore hardness (i.e The hardness of the surface). For example, on the long sides where the crumb rubber is constrained by the surface of the molds, the materials interact to create a non-linear textural yet flat surface. However, on the free short end, different mixtures allow for different expressions that range from a pillow-like form and hardness to almost natural crystalline formations.
