Drowsy Islands
a café
Drowsy Specialty Coffee’s space in Khorfakkan takes its inspiration from the textures and colors of the Hajar Mountain range that creates a serene backdrop to the beachfront space.
In a nod of respect to the austere mountains in the background, we introduced a series of rock islands that help define an open and drowsy space. These rock islands interact with the seating, sometimes becoming part of the conversations, sometimes allowing for some greenery to pop out, just as the Hajar Mountain does after a rainy night. At other times, the rocks become seats themselves, even if for a fleeting and drowsy moment.
The rock islands sit within a neutral space, left almost as we had found it. The rocks from the mountains interact with the construction material palette that remains, amplifying the potential interaction between textured natural rocks and imperfect man-made concrete. The rawness interplays with dark and oxidized metallic elements that work to increase the contrast between the natural objects and the space, allowing each element to be celebrated.
Finally, a trip to the mountains is never complete without a rug to rest on. Thus, a series of oriental rugs, which have become a Drowsy signature since we opened our first space in Sharjah in 2017, are introduced. The rugs introduce subtle elements of color and softness, creating comfortable seating space that invites you to spend a drowsy moment looking at the sea while you sip on your favorite cup of coffee.
